Flexible Packaging of Ground Roasted CoffeeTOGA, PO Box 30501, 01000 Sao Paulo, Brazil Flexible laminates are the primary means of packaging ground roasted coffee in most European countries while the metal can still predominates in the United States. Designs of various flexible packaging systems are described and data are provided on several films and laminate constructions. Single part and two part flexible packs each have some advantages; both are cheaper than metal cans. Several barrier systems in flexible packages are already suitable for institutional packs (shelf life of 5-6 months) while structures containing metalized polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film or aluminum foil (ALU) provide shelf lives of over one year for general consumer use.
