Development of New Ionomers With Novel Gas Permeation Properties

John C. Chen

DuPont Packaging and Industrial Polymers, 200 Powder Mill Road Wilmington, Delaware 19880-0323, USA, john.c.chen{at}usa.dupont.com

Ethylene ionomers, such as Surlyn® from DuPont, have been the premium sealant materials for packaging applications due to their excellent seal strength and process robustness. The ethylene ionomers exhibit their unique property characteristics because they form a network morphology. In this article new ethylene ionomers will be discussed. Their versatile compositions and the unique morphology will be described together with enhanced gas permeability properties.

Key Words: Ionomers • fatty acid • FAMI • gas transport • permeability • breathability • smart vapor barrier • morphology.
